WHITMORE HIGH SCHOOL'S UNIVERSITY FAIR 2020

On Monday 2 March our school opened its doors to Year 12 students from across theUniversity fair 1 borough and welcomed them to our University Fair.

Thirty one universities travelled here to talk to students and give advice and guidance on the next stage in their education and future career. Students from 12 different schools attended with over 450 students passing through the fair. They had the opportunity to attend talks on Student Finance, STEM Careers, Applications to Medicine and Dentistry, Oxbridge Applications, Degree Apprenticeships and, Applying to Competitive Applications, as well as talk to experts about applying to universities in the USA.

Mr Gareth Thomas, MP, supported the school in organising and promoting the event and also attended the fair and we are very grateful for his participation.

The feedback from the universities that attended was overwhelmingly positive and they were impressed by the quality of the questions our students asked. Some of their comments are below:

‘Students were able to ask pertinent and intelligent questions about studying at University and comparisons between courses’.

‘It was lovely to come back to Whitmore again and meet your students. They are always so polite and positive.’

‘Students were very happy to be at the Fair and thinking about the next step in their future career.’

Here are some observations from the students themselves:

An Evening of Opportunity – Whitmore’s University Fair

‘The University Fair delivered so much information that I was previously unaware of. As a result I feel much more confident in making a decision on the path I would like to take.

University fair 2The fair provided insight into the different ways of progressing in the world, including degree apprenticeships, which really opened my eyes to this as an exciting option.

University fair 3Finally the conversations with the people from such prestigious universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, allowed me to clear up any misconceptions I might have had and as a result helped me feel much better informed.

Overall the fair was fantastic and I feel much better prepared, informed and confident of making the best decision for an exciting future.’ Ali 12RJA

‘I found the University Fair very informative, gaining greater understanding on topics such as student finance during a talk. My fears about university were dispelled when I met the university staff as they were all so friendly and willing to help. I was able to ask questions about law and the way in which it operates in each university. Also I now understand what university life might entail from the student representatives. This has given me a clear idea of what IUniversity fair 4 am looking for in a university and what steps I need to do in order to get there.

There were so many universities at the fair, which meant I was not limited in the choice of who I could talk to. Also the inclusion of American universities was an added bonus.

Another highlight was the talk on Degree Apprenticeships which opened my mind to the options available.

University fair 5University fair 6Overall attending the Fair was hugely beneficial to me and I now know all the options available to me.’ Audrey 12GJM
