Music Concert

Whitmore High School’s music concert on the 8th of February was an incredible opportunity for young musicians to showcase their talents in front of a live audience. The students and teachers alike worked together throughout the day, holding rehearsals and practising until the start of the concert. The audience were greeted by the Real Book group, who played a selection of improvised pieces led by Otis. They were shortly followed by string group, featuring Whitmore’s cellists and violinists, who played ‘Minuet’ from Music for the Royal Fireworks by Handel. Ben (11LNW) and Emily (9SBY) from the string group played a sibling duet by Jean Baptiste Bréval before the Cygnus Trio, a professional group consisting of Javier, Hannah and Cesar, all instrumental teachers at Whitmore, followed up with ‘Lighthouse Keepings’, composed by Year 13 student Giuliana (13KRW). Following on, Serena (12KSR) entranced the audience with a piece called ‘Les Cyclopes’ by Rameau. This was followed by our own Samba band, whose energetic and lively playing was arranged by IIan Pattinson.

Following these wonderful acts, choir sang ‘Running Up That Hill’ by Kate Bush. The magic didn’t stop there however; we then had two solo vocal acts by Onaly (8HLN), performing ’Burn’ from the musical Hamilton, and Kiarah (13ANS) who sang ‘One and Only’ by Adele. On the stage after that were the jazz band, who played ‘Pick Up the Pieces’ by Average White Band and the theme from ‘Family Guy’ by Walter Murphy. Next was Concert Band who played ‘Eighties Flashback’, a song arranged by Paul Murtha which consisted of many songs such as ‘Thriller’ by Michael Jackson and “You Give Love a Bad Name’ by Bon Jovi. They then played a medley of songs by Lizzo, including ‘Juice’ and ‘About Damn Time’. Lastly, Steel Band led by Dexter Joseph performed ‘Grease is the Word’ by Frankie Valli and ‘Baobab Tree’ by Gaby Hernandez. As an encore the Steel Band played two more songs: ‘Count on Me’ by Bruno Mars and ‘What a Wonderful World’ by Sam Cooke.
