Whitmore Students Meet the Kanneh-Masons!
On Thursday 9th October, we had the extraordinary privilege of attending an unforgettable event of conversation and music with Dr Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason and her son, Braimah Kanneh-Mason, at Nower Hill High School.
Dr Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason - acclaimed British author, academic, and passionate advocate for diversity in the arts - was joined by Braimah, a gifted violinist and one of the seven remarkable siblings in the world-renowned Kanneh-Mason family. Together, they shared powerful insights into their journey through the world of classical music.
The event was elevated by a breath taking live performance from Braimah, who played a piece by Bach with such emotion and precision that the audience was visibly moved. His music spoke volumes, but so did his words. Braimah opened up about the discipline and resilience required to become a professional musician, and courageously shared his experiences of racism and the strength it took to overcome adversity.
Both Braimah and Dr Kadiatu spoke passionately about challenging the stereotypes that have long excluded Black, and Brown, people from classical music spaces. Their conversation was a masterclass in advocacy, empowerment, and the importance of representation. Dr Kadiatu also introduced her latest book, To Be Young, Gifted and Black, a compelling account of raising seven musically gifted children while navigating the realities of racism in Britain.
To end the event on a high note, attendees had the rare opportunity to meet Dr Kadiatu in person. She generously signed copies of her book and took time to speak with students, asking about their dreams and aspirations with genuine warmth and encouragement.
Our students, and staff, were truly inspired by the event.
“I also learned a lot about the impact of racism and how painful and damaging it can be for those who experience it. Hearing the Kanneh-Masons speak so openly and honestly about their journey was powerful. What really stood out to me was their passion for giving back and helping others—it was so motivating.”
“And one of the best parts? Getting my book signed by Dr Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason! She was so kind and took time to speak to us individually. It was such an exciting moment and made the whole event even more special.”
This was more than just an event - it was a magical, thought-provoking experience that left everyone inspired and uplifted. All attendees would also like to thank the school for gifting them each a copy of ‘Young, Gifted and Black’
