Unlocking the Future: Year 11 Preparing for Opportunities Conference
On Monday 12th January, our Year 11 students took part in a one-day conference designed to help them prepare for life after school.
They were able to choose from twenty-two different potential career sectors, ranging from Art & Design and the creative industries through to Medicine, Computer Science, Business & Marketing, Psychology, Degree Apprenticeships and everything in between. Each session offered a valuable insight into possible career paths, and students were able to put questions to an expert at the end of every talk.
Throughout the day, students selected three career taster workshops led by professionals working in their fields of expertise. These interactive sessions explored the variety of roles available within each area, along with the skills and qualifications needed to pursue them.
Activities included animation design, programming robots in computer science, discovering the role of a modern engineer, learning about the life of a business manager, and understanding the challenges faced by doctors – including practising how to suture a wound. Students also learnt how to care for young children, investigated the work of a crime scene investigator and explored what it is like to travel the world as part of a career. It was an enjoyable and successful day, and below are reflections from four of our students:
“I attended a crime scene investigation workshop. It was really interesting as we were able to do practical, hands-on work that resembled real-life circumstances. This is going to help me decide my future career paths within forensic psychology. I even found the International Business workshop very interactive and informative and it gave me an insight into what the job would be like.” Lina
“I attended the STEM workshop – The presenter was very friendly and helpful. The way the robots moved was really cool and I understood the background of how they worked. In Business and Enterprise, we practised our presentation and speaking skills. We were given lots of information and now I have new ideas for the future. I enjoyed the Construction workshop the most and will be considering this area in the future. It was very physical and practical, which suited me.” Devan
“I believe that this workshop day has opened up lots of career paths and the day has been inspiring and informative. It was a diverse day and there were many different activities to choose from. The Medicine workshop was very interesting and I learnt how vast that field is.” Miruna
“I attended the Army workshop and really enjoyed learning about the different opportunities they offer, e.g. working as an engineer or a chef in the army. I also found the Travel and Tourism workshop really enjoyable – it was my favourite – and I plan on considering this as a future career path. It also gave me great ideas for my gap year!” Amber
The students were well prepared and had many thoughtful questions for the experts at the end of each workshops.
We are very grateful to all the presenters who gave up their time to plan and deliver such an inspiring set of workshops.
