On A Crusade To Better Grades
In June 2017, Year 12 AS level History students took a trip to Royal Holloway University in order to learn about the First and Third Crusade to help with coursework.
The trip consisted of lectures led by Professor Phillips, Professor Harris and Professor Jotischky (all of whom are world renowned experts on the Crusades and Byzantium), an undergraduate seminar, a debate and then ended with a tour around the beautiful campus. The lectures were very insightful and students learnt that so many people fought and for different reasons. Some Christians and Muslims fought for holy pilgrimage, some fought for material gain, but the majority fought for a combination of the two and a desire to keep Jerusalem as their holy City. The tuition was to an exceptional standard, and this would ultimately help students produce fantastic pieces of coursework.
The other part of the trip was a remarkable tour around the campus of The Royal Holloway University, led by one of their top history graduates. The University had some wonderful sculptures including one of the founders of Royal Holloway (Thomas Holloway and Elizabeth Jesser Reid). Some of the amazing facilities included their chapel, huge library, various rooms of castle-style accommodation and much more!
The participants would like to thank Mr Rebbitt, Ms Sibona, and Ms Ennis on this very informative and interesting trip as it was an amazing opportunity.
