Work Related Learning - Year 10 Interview Experience 9 & 10 May 2019
Representatives from local industry, universities, colleges and other major organisations came into school to interview our Year 10 students. The purpose was to give the students an opportunity to experience a formal work related interview before they go out on work experience in July. The interview lasted up to 30 minutes with the advisor discussing the student’s CV, giving advice on presentation and how to improve the content.
The students were asked what they had learnt from the experience which would help them with future interviews. They responded with a wide range of answers:
⺠I have learnt how to explain questions in full to improve communication and how to interact with the interviewer. They advised me to use the STAR method (situation, task, action, and result) to help recall and explain and demonstrate points in my CV.
âºI now know how to lay out my CV to make the best impression and also am able to talk about my strengths with confidence.
âºI realise that I must make sure to mention my communication skills on my CV and to fully describe the qualities I could bring to the workplace.
âºThe advisor emphasised the importance of getting careers advice so that I understand my future options and to listen to every piece of information you are given.
âºI now understand that I need to work hard on my education and never give up so that I can become the best version of myself.
âºThe most important thing about today was that I got practice in having an interview and learning to cope with the nerves. I will now be prepared and ready to answer questions in the future – overall it was such a great experience.
The advisors also gained much from the 2 day experience and responded by saying:
â¼ What great students with good ambition and a real will to succeed. They were well mannered with a positive attitude and with such interesting backgrounds.
â¼ I had a wonderful day meeting really interesting and inspiring students, thank you so much for inviting me.
â¼ Fantastic high achieving students who were very future oriented and proactive – I was impressed by the amount of extra-curricular activities they were taking part in.
â¼ The students took the event seriously and were extremely well prepared with impressive CVs.
â¼ Very engaging students with great potential, talent, focused goals and visions for their future.
What a wonderful opportunity for the students to put their ideas and career information to the test. I would Iove to come back to Whitmore again.
â¼ It was a privilege and a joy to work with Whitmore’s students. If I was hiring all would have been offered jobs – well done!
Thank you very much to everyone involved with organising and participating in this very worthwhile event - V Sullivan - Careers Co-ordinator
