Whitmore: A Visit to the Heart of Democracy
Our Year 12 A Level Politics class had the incredible opportunity to visit the iconic Houses of Parliament. This trip provided a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the workings of government and allowed us to experience the historic building where decisions that shape our nation are made.
The day began with a guided tour, starting in Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the Parliamentary estate. The hall’s stunning medieval architecture left us in awe, and we learnt about its rich history and the countless influential figures who have passed through its doors. We also visited both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, gaining insights into their distinct roles and functions. Our guide took us on a journey from the Magna Carta to modern-day legislation, shedding light on the evolution of the parliamentary system.
One of the highlights of the day was a workshop on the legislative process. In small groups, we drafted and debated our own ‘bills’ while forming political parties with unique policies. A friendly competition ensued to see which of us would be elected as an MP. This hands-on activity gave us a deeper appreciation of the complexities involved in turning ideas into laws. It also underscored the importance of discussion, compromise, and representation in a functioning democracy.
Overall, the trip was an eye-opening experience that left many of us with a newfound respect for the political system. It reminded us that politics isn’t just about the headlines it’s about real people working hard on issues that affect all of us.
